Let’s talk about something that hits hard when you have ADHD — that feeling in your gut when someone doesn’t respond to a message… or when you finally get a win, and your brain goes, “Yeah, but you just got lucky.”
Sound familiar?
That’s Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria and Imposter Syndrome — and when you live with ADHD, the two are often tangled together like a ball of emotional chaos.
And here’s the thing: even when you know it’s happening… it still knocks the wind out of you.
💥 Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria Feels Like a Punch — Even When It’s Not Real
Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (sometimes called RSD) isn’t just about actual rejection — it’s about perceived rejection.
Someone’s late replying to an email.
You don’t get picked for something.
You misread a tone.
And suddenly, your brain spirals into “they hate me,” “I’m not good enough,” or “I’ve ruined everything.”
And it’s visceral. Like full-body reaction. Like can’t-focus, heart-racing, fight-or-flight mode.
It’s not a character flaw — it’s a brain wiring thing. And ADHD makes that wiring way more sensitive to misfires.
😬 And Then Comes the Imposter Syndrome…
Even when things are going well — maybe especially when they’re going well — there’s that sneaky voice that says:
“Who do you think you are?”
“They’re going to figure out you’re a fraud.”
“You’re not really qualified for this.”
Imposter Syndrome doesn’t care how much you’ve achieved. It doesn’t care how long you’ve been doing the thing.
It just latches on and drains your confidence before you even take the next step.
Now mix that with Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria?
Yeah. It’s no wonder so many people with ADHD feel stuck, overwhelmed, or just plain emotionally exhausted.
🔄 It’s Not Just You. And It’s Not Permanent.
I’ve seen it in my clients. I’ve lived it myself.
This combo — Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria + Imposter Syndrome — can absolutely keep you from putting yourself out there.
But there are things you can do to shift it.
🟡 Recognize what’s happening in the moment
🟡 Set strong (and healthy!) boundaries
🟡 Stop over-explaining (you don’t owe everyone an essay)
🟡 Surround yourself with people who get your brain
🟡 Work with an ADHD coach, therapist, or support community that understands this stuff deeply
You don’t have to “fix” yourself. You just have to find ways to support yourself — and that changes everything.
