Amazon Kindle and iPhone

For a while now Amazon has been offering Kindle which is a wireless electronic device for people to read books. At first I thought it was cool idea but didn't even consider purchasing it because it costs a few hundreds dollars and would not help me read all of the books I currently own. I also like to physically touch a book when I read so that I can underline, highlight, or use sticky notes.

I was really excited yesterday to learn that there is now a Kindle iPhone App. I haven't yet purchased any books yet but have downloaded a few sample chapters on the Kindle iphone app. I'm actually pleasantly surprised that I like reading on the iphone. There is only one small paragraph at a time which is less overwhelming for me than regular books.

There are quite a few ADD / ADHD Books available on Kindle like:

You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?!

Delivered from Distraction

The Disorganized Mind

We Don't Need What Ifs!

Giftadd I am currently reading the new Book The Gift of Adult ADD by Lara Honos-Webb. While I am a bit turned off by the whole ADD Gift thing I do admit the book has some good advice. Of course it's the same type of advice that a reader can get from other books like The Disorganized Mind, Delivered From Distraction, and Odd One Out.

I am really quite disturbed by Lara Honos-Webb's views about ADHD medication though. She claims that she isn't against ADHD medication and that she knows it works. However she talks about successful people with Adult ADHD who did not take medication. She keeps asking the question What if these people took medication? She leads the readers to believe that these people would not have been as successful if they took medication.

It would be one thing IF some of these people actually took ADHD medication and became less successful. But they haven't! She doesn't have anything to back this up with!! I think her book full of What Ifs is a real disservice to the Adult ADHD community!

I firmly believe that whether or not a person takes medication for Adult ADHD is a personal choice. It really angers me though that people like Lara Honos-Webb are out there clouding people's judgments with What Ifs!

Empathy and ADHD

I am currently reading the book Is It You, Me, or Adult A.D.D.? and I'm not quite ready to review the book just yet. I have some really conflicting feelings and opinions about this book and want to sort through them before I publicly review it.  I may even choose not to review it. It may be better for me to not cloud people's judgments with my review and let them make up their own minds on the book Is It You, Me, or Adult A.D.D.?.

I will however say that the author, Gina Pera talks about about ADHD and Empathy. I have my own thoughts and ideas when it comes to ADHD and Empathy. Over the past decade or so I've observed children as young as 2 years old and adults into their late 80's with ADHD. Quite often at first glance it may seem like these children and adults are not empathetic.

After getting to know these people and interacting with them in non-judgmental and/or non-threatening manner I found that people with ADHD are very empathetic. In many people with ADHD actions quite often are not tied to thoughts so I can understand why it appears there may not empathy there.

Also when somebody is highly sensitive and empathetic the world can be a tough place. Just think about how much worse it is for a person with ADHD who is constantly feeling misunderstood. In order to survive, a lot of children and adults with ADHD are forced to turn off the feelings. So, if somebody's feelings aren't even registering it's impossible to me empathic.

Disorganized Mind Reviews on Amazon

Disorganized_mind I'm somewhat amused by some of the Amazon reviews and comments about The Disorganized Mind written by Nancy Ratey. Some of the Amazon reviewers think there's some type of conspiracy or something because several of the reviews are from ADHD Coaches.

The funny thing is that The Disorganized Mind is about Self-Coaching. Self-Coaching does not involve hiring an ADHD Coach. The ADHD Coaches who reviewed the book did so because they truly think the book is helpful for Adults with ADHD. The Disorganized Mind talks about strategies that people with ADHD can use on their own.

So the those of us ADHD Coaches who have reviewed and praised The Disorganized Mind are actually risking losing some business! It's really too bad that some of the people reviewing and commenting on Amazon have NOT even read the The Disorganized Mind yet either!

Surviving Life with Undiagnosed ADD

Struggle A couple of weeks ago Bryan Hutchinson of ADDer World sent me a review copy of his new book One Boy's Struggle: A Memoir: Surviving Life with Undiagnosed ADD. It's a great book and as somebody who was not diagnosed with ADHD until I was an adult I really relate to a lot of what Bryan went through growing up. It's a great book and I highly recommend it.

Just a word of warning:  The book can bring up a lot of emotion while reading it. It can trigger some unpleasant memories. If you grew up struggling with undiagnosed ADHD like Bryan and I did, be prepared to stir up some of those memories while reading One Boy's Struggle: A Memoir: Surviving Life with Undiagnosed ADD.

My Favorite ADHD Books??

I recently received an email from somebody asking me what my favorite ADHD book is and why. This person also wanted to know which one book I recommend. Well, in all honesty I really can’t answer this question. I don’t have just one favorite book and I really can’t recommend only one book. I can recommend a few to start with though.

For Adults with ADD/ADHD

For women with ADD/ADHD

For more information about what I think about these books you can read the Books about ADD section of my Blog. For additional book recommendations take a look at the Living with ADD Bookstore. Books are listed by different categories including: parenting, relationships, workplace issues, organizing, etc.

What are your favorite ADHD Books?
