Since Michele Novotni offered the free Teleseminar Adult ADHD and Social Success and the ADD Book Club starts discussing her book about social skills tonight, social skills has been on my mind a lot lately. Yesterday I went to a family bridal shower and was really observing how people interacted with each other and was trying to pay attention to my own social interactions with people. Observing people is a great way for me to keep my brain stimulated too!
In addition to realizing many of the people at this shower also seemed have social challenges I also learned a bit about myself. I really don’t do very well when asked the question "What’s new?". I tend automatically reply with "nothing" or "not too much". I guess in the past this has been a lot easier for me than to figure out what the person really means when they ask what’s new and come up with an appropriate response.
One of the women who asked me "What’s new?" is a friend of the family who I’ve known my whole life. I think part of the reason I had trouble answering her was because I couldn’t remember the last time I saw her. I think it may have been over 5 years. Now that I’m looking back I probably could have responded to her asking a clarifying question.
I really want to work on this what’s new thing. I don’t want people to assume I’m really boring person who does nothing with her life…
